Believe it or not, we used the free camping website again but this time it worked wonders! We showed up Maverick in a small time outside of Zion and bought some firewood and headed over to Kolob road where we followed it for about 6 miles till we reached a turn off. We parked next to another car who happened to have other kids from BYU that GV knew, small world right, and we unloaded our stuff and walked a short distance into a field and threw the tarp down. We set things up and played some ukelele and headed to sleep. It was pretty chilly but nothing that we couldn't handle.
We woke up in the morning and made some breakfast and headed over to Zion National Park where we were confronted with a huge line of cars waiting to get in. After finally showing them our park pass, we made our way over to the road that breaks off to go to Angel's landing. To our dismay, it was blocked off and a security guard directed us elsewhere because it was too crowded and there was literally no where to park. We were disappointed but knew that we could probably come back on Monday and do it. We drove up a different road and ended doing a really cool hike. We stopped and ate some lunch and then pulled off on a random spot and made our way up a little canyon. We picked out a point that we wanted to hike to and an hour or two later had summited a small mountain. The view from the top was actually incredible and it was a fantastic hike with perfect weather and perfect company. Afterwards we drove to Kanab and found a small, cheap motel that we managed to sneak all six of us into. The only disappointing part that was the "hot breakfast" was cereal, fruit, and a bagel that you could warm up in the microwave to make it hot. It was good though and we headed over to church Kanab. The ward was so nice and welcoming and we loved it. We stayed all three hours and then headed over to Megan's grandparents house in Saint George where we played tennis, swam and ate pizza. It was a great day.
We then made our way back to the same campsite we stayed in Friday night but this time went back a lot further and found an awesome spot. It was right next to a river and had a fire pit and sand to set up the tent on so the ground wasn't too hard. I ended up sleeping outside because we decided to put up the tent and it was four person tent and with 6 people, it just wasn't going to work. We made a fire and had some really good hotdogs and quesadillas along with s'mores. It was a fun night and we all had some good campfire talk.
Our final day in Zion we hiked Angel's landing in the morning which was incredible and kind of ran out of food for lunch so we ran back to town and grabbed a snack from the gas station and then went back and hiked a short hike which didn't lead anywhere really and then did emerald pools, which was actually really cool. There was still a bunch of snow at the end of one of the waterfalls and I was dumb enough to hike up to it and take my shirt off and get under the waterfall. Not that great. It was a really fun day though and I really enjoyed hiking and being with the people we were with. We drove to Saint George so that we could go to Red Robin, and we absolutely crushed their unlimited fries and burgers and I drank probably about 7 glasses of lemonade. It was amazing. I barely made it home driving after everyone fell asleep and I stayed awake by chugging mountain dew and singing along to every song on my Spotify playlist. It was probably one of my favorite weekends of the school year, and I think I got a six pack from laughing so much. I love those people and I love Zion.
